The Fall from Society

" What! Every comfort of life knocked off! Journeys, London, servants, horses, table- contractions and restrictions every where. To live no longer with the decencies of a private gentlemen! No, he would sooner quit Kellynch-hall at once, than remain in it on such disgraceful terms" (Austen, 17).

Austen is showing the reader the importance of outwardly appearance when it comes to society. Their fall from high class would be swift and painful if anyone saw that the family was no longer living with the luxuries of their respected class. The importance of their place in society is very important to Ann's family.
